F3. Local Heroes

Social Studies/Language Arts
Students will identify and profile a hero in their community.

What You Need

A tape recorder or notebook to record interviews with family, friends, or neighbors

What to Do

Ask students to identify a courageous or heroic individual in their family or their community. They should talk to family members, friends, and others in the community to help identify this individual.

Tell students to tape record or write down details about what makes this person a hero. Remind students that a hero can be anyone from a neighborhood child who volunteers, to a heroic pet, to someone who has overcome a disability.

Have students compose an essay about their hero and present it to the class.
