Subjects

Family and individual portraits were likely the most obvious and reliable source of income for most photographers. We will deal with that aspect of the business in the following chapter.

On gets the sense however that most photographers were happy to get out of the studio and use their skills of perspective and composition on a larger palette.

Thus we have the most reliable evidence available as to what the general appearance of small towns, their surroundings and their buildings.

In terms of bringing the physical reality of life in the early 1900’s  into the historians frame of reference, the expression, ”a picture is worth a thousand words” might be an understatement.

Here we us an arbitrary method of classifying their efforts and sort some representative photos under these headings:
