Avery’s Resort

History

Joe Morrison – sold to Joe Avery 1912 – had a store on the site. Joe Avery built the hotel
1980 – sold to Christian Enrichment Family Camp
 


Features

- lakeside location
- steps upward to top of the valley and down towards lake.
- built on recognized aboriginal site – mound nearby
- had gravity running water system – its own generator

Crayston Mound
SE 20-3-13 



History

- one of a series of mounds in the area.

- examined by Chris Vickers during the autumn of 1941. Excavation through the middle revealed a cremated burial, some tube pipe fragments, a few artifacts and two pottery shards similar to those from the McLaren Earth works and the Avery Village Site.

Thos. Rogers managed the store – near the Blaine Mill.
Alex Blaine started a sawmill in 1879. It was taken over by Reeves and Taylor
Walsh & Sons either built or took over the flour mill in 1882.
Blaine & Reid built the flour mill in 1882

- used as home by Crayston family in 1890
- traces of original trail to townsite still visible
- 2 km from buffalo kill site
- The name for the town of Glenora originated with the mill of the same name – in turn named after am Ogilvie Co. mill near Montreal that was called Glenora Mill and produced “Glenora Patent” flour.
- Millstone from mill on same site – now on grounds of St. George’s Anglican Church, Glenora
