McLellan and English Building - 436 7th Avenue S

Building Code 574.D.5
Construction
Date
ca. 1895
Origins Retail
Description
The McLellan and English Building occupies a central place in a strip of brick-fronted buildings, most constructed in the 1890’s, that line the west side of Seventh Avenue at the heart of Virden’s Heritage District.
Heritage Value
The McLellan and English Building, originally a dry-goods store is valued for its association with that business. What appear to be two separate buildings (especially when viewed from the back), is now owned as one property. In an 1891 photo the building on the left is not yet built. As of 1912 both parts housed the McLellan and English General Store, so it is likely that  they extended their operation, established in 1895, by annexing this building. The structure’s modest Romanesque Revival-style features are intact on the facade’s second level
