The Alexandra
Hotel occupies a corner lot across from the former
Railway
Station at one entrance to the Virden Heritage Business District. |

The Alexandra
Hotel, a rare example of Second Empire architecture, is
one
of Virden’s most visible and enduring landmarks. It is further
valued in
that it has been in operation at this location, under this name, since
the
building was erected in 1907. Its imposing form and distinctive
rows
of dormers along with its prominent location across from the former
C.P.R.
Station offer strong links to important elements of Virden’s
history.

the buildings tall rectangular three-story form finished in brick.
- The Second Empire form with the metal-clad roof lined with
alternating
peaked and round-arched roofline dormers
-the round arched second floor windows semicircular arched
dripmoulding
with capstones
- the rectangular openings on the main floor, both with capstones
- the small round-arched window in Nelson Avenue the entrance way
- the rusticated stone sills and brick stringcourses on the second
level,
one a simple brick band, the other of bricks set at an angle
- the plain wood-finished eaves |
