Description
The Former Post Office occupies a large lot on the north side of Nelson Street, west of Seventh Avenue, a streetscape of considerable variety, which has retained its heritage character even with the addition of several modern structures.
Heritage Value
The Former Post Office Building completed by local contractor W.T. Manser in 1914, is one of Virden’s grandest buildings and is a fine example of ambitious Post Office. The fact that similar buildings were erected in places such as Moose Jaw and other larger towns across the prairies in the pre-WW1 years is an indication that both the citizens of Virden and the Federal Department of Public Works saw growth in Virden’s future. The building, which also housed the RCMP Office for a time, is valued for its role as a substantial Government Service and for its architecture, materials and workmanship as seen in the fine clock tower, attractive dormers and on the terrazzo floor. The tower clock was presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, Sir. James Aikens.
