The physical form of the town of Virden is firmly rooted in its relationship with its transportation links. At its origin, its form was dictated by the railway track. The first station and elevators were on the northeast side of the track, ensuring some early development in that direction, but although one of the first hotels was built on that side as well, most of the first commercial buildings were erected on the southwest side, near the station along 6th Avenue, and down intersecting streets.
